SMTP AUTHENICATION

Arnor 大大, help!!

我使用的mail client軟體是Becky! Internet Mail. 透過smtp auth驗證,郤始終無法通過,之前也為此問了不少問題,結論是maild架構.設定都對,就是能收信不能發信.
後來改用outlook express,居然一試就通,因使用2maild架構,確定是smtp auth問題,我上Becky! Internet Mail討論區去找答案,也有人提出相似問題,後來其作者有下了一個結論,就是server使用所謂的Qmail SMTPD Auth,會錯報其支援其中的MD5格式,但實際上卻有問題, 而Outlook express本來就不支援MD5,故反而不會出問題.這是Qmail SMTPD Auth之Bug,請user和mail server提供者聯繫.

我查看Becky和Maild之間的protocol record,也有提到MD5, 請問Arnor大大能協助解釋並進而解決這問題嗎? 以下節錄該討論區重點部份供大大參考.

Basically, Becky asked the SMTP Server what it supported & it listed CRAM-MD5 as one of them. Well, in the case of Qmail, that is not a correct response. Qmail does not support CRAM-MD5. But, since it told Becky that it did, then that is exactly what it got.. MD5.

Right, this is a little complex.

Firstly, this is not a problem with Becky or Qmail (the SMTP Server in question). Qmail does not actually support SMTP Auth at all. This functionality is provided by a compatible add-on or patch. In our case, this was something called Qmail SMTPD Auth. It was this add-on that was wrongly reporting to Becky that it supported MD5. The add-on does claim to support MD5. But, our support people couldn''t find anybody that was running it & using MD5.

In the end they had to modify the SMTP code (the add-on code I assume) to not report MD5 support.

So, where do we stand?

Basically, it is ISP''s fault. They do not probably understand the significance of the MD5 issue & why Outlook does not care (probably their test email client). I recommend that you point out to your ISP that their SMTP server is reporting that it supports CRAM-MD5 SMTP Auth, whilst it actually doesn''t. At a push, tell them you want to use MD5 as their SMTP Server claims that it can support it. After all, it is the most secure method. Now, since Outlook doesn''t support MD5 (point this out if you need to) this will, at least, force them to use something other than Outlook to test what you''re talking about.

md5 部份有誤沒錯,
